Sanders to join Pokes

OSU coach Mike Gundy played with a Sanders, now he will coach one.

Barry J. Sanders, son of Barry Sanders, will join the Cowboys as a graduate transfer after he completes his degree from Stanford at the conclusion of the semester, according to a report by The Oklahoman.

Sanders told The Oklahoman, “Just being a part of the program, and being able to get a chance to officially say I’m a Poke, will be something special for me personally.”

Sanders gives OSU another option in an already crowded backfield.

OSU signed running backs LD Brown and Justice Hill on National Signing Day and bring back Chris Carson, Rennie Childs and Jeff Carr.

Carson was OSU’s leading rusher with 517 yards.

Basically, there is a lot to figure out in 2016.

The younger Sanders rushed for 664 yards in three seasons as a Cardinal. He redshirted his freshman year, making him eligible to transfer schools without having to sit out a season.

The elder Sanders won the 1988 Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma State after rushing for 2,850 yards and 44 touchdowns, which is considered one of the greatest individual seasons in college football history. He shared the backfield with Mike Gundy, who was OSU's quarterback at the time and now OSU's coach.

“He definitely didn’t want me to make a decision without considering other options,” said Sanders of his father in The Oklahoman. “What I told him was that this was something I’ve been thinking about for some time. I just knew this was the right decision and the right fit for a variety of different reasons. So when I kind of explained my reasons behind it, he was pretty comfortable with it and he’s just as excited as I am.”
